Ha Long Bay, the World Heritage Bay of Vietnam

Ha Long Bay is one of the major attractions of Vietnam where its name is known by all over the world. This place was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site because of its natural beauty, hence, the tourists should not miss paying a visit.

Ha Long bay is one of the bays of Gulf of Tonkin, located at the North of Vietnam, in Quang Ninh Province which is not far away (170 kilometers) from the capital city, Hanoi, and it is near China. Halong Bay has the area of 1,500 square kilometers and its distance of its coast is 120 kilometers. There are 1,969 limestone isles that popped out from the sea surface. There are plentiful trees on the isles and each of them has large caves which their beauty is to be explored.

Ha Long Bay is pronounced as “Vinh Ha Long” in Vietnamese which means “descending dragon”. According to local legend, Vietnam had to fight with Chinese invaders and the god sent a family of dragons as protectors to assist Vietnamese. These dragons started spitting out jewels and the jewels turned into the islands and islets dotting the bay, linking together to form a great wall against the invaders. The other legend tells a story of ancient creature, Tarasque, that is believed to be living at the depth of the bay.

Popular activity of Ha Long Bay is cruising to explore its beauty, environment and extraordinary views. There are other adventurous activities such as Payak paddling, cliff climbing and having meals on a boat.

Places to be visited

1. Dau Go Cave: The largest cave of the bay. There are 3 wide tunnels inside and full of stalactites and stalagmites. It is also called “amazing cave” since there is a high post stalagmite and other one that looks like a dragon.

2. Cat Ba Island: The largest island of the bay where it has the area of 190 square kilometers. There are people who live permanently there. It has nice beach and distinctive lifestyle of the people of fishermen village. There are also swimming and sightseeing spots.

3. Night Market: A place for getting souvenirs for the tourists who are around the bay. Since Ha Long is growing economically fast, there are restaurants and bars that have opened up. And if you like shopping, there are many goods for you to choose too.

How to get there?

You can take a flight from Thailand to Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam via various airlines. And then, continue with the bus to Ha Long city which takes about 3 hours 30 minutes. And it takes 15 minutes from Ha Long bus station to Ha Long Bay port.
