Intramuros, the birth of Manila!

For ones who love to explore about history and cultures, Philippines is one of the country of Asian that has long interesting history as it once been colonized by Spain. Over manila city, there are plenty of Spanish style building and neo gothic architecture which make it more interesting. And the ancient city of Intramuros is a must see. It is the past, memories and the birth of Manila, the Capital of Philippines.

Intramuros

Intramuros is the birth of Manila city, the capital of Philippines. It is named as the historical heritage in 1600, located at the shore of Manila bay, south of the Pasig River. It is the fortress with 4 km walls each side with the area of 395 yard where villages and many significant places located such as St. Augustin Convent, hospitals, military office and civil offices. That makes it the largest area covered with strong walls like Spanish word “within the walls” ,lasting more than 400 years and was built in 1571, in order to protect the city from the Spanish pirates, by the leader ” Miguel Lopez de Legazpi”

In the age of colonization of Spain and America, Intramuros is considered the center of prosperity and it is the kingdom that was influenced from western architecture. Once, it was the part of Islamic kingdom before the Spanish takeover in 1571 and transformed Manila into the Capital of the colonial. At war time, intramuros had been changed the controllers many times. After 1 years of Spain conquer, it fell to Britain in 1762 then back to Spain after 2 years. In 1898, it was under the control of America and stood still during the WW2 but also destroyed by Japanese army. Apart from wars, it went through many disaster like earthquake , fire, and storm and was left with nothing for a certain while until Philippines government restored it and opened as Tourist Attract as present day.

Travel to Intramuros

It is easy to travel to by the shuttle bus from Manila airport then continue with train to the Central Terminal Station. No entrance fee and its opening time from 0900-1700 daily.

It is said that if you want to enter the real soul of the places, you must visit the religious places and historical area. The travel to Intramuros is considered traveling to the heart and soul of people in Manila , traveling back in time to reflect the memories through this wonderful Intramuros
