To Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar

Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar since 2005, now welcomes the tourists to visit. The name “Naypyidaw” literally means the place of the king or the great land. Naypyidaw is 320 kilometers far from Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar. At present, Naypyidaw is Myanmar’s third largest city, after Yangon and Mandalay. From being ordinary city, now Naypyidaw becomes the administrative center of the country, causing Naypyidaw gets on rank of top ten fastest growing cities in the world.

The terrain is probably the cause of capital change. Naypyidaw is located at the West of Pyanymana, Mandalay, almost the center of Myanmar. It has mountainous landscape, which offers better military benefit than Yangon.

In the past, Naypyidaw was a quiet upcountry with little population. There were not so much resources in the city. After government of Myanmar declared Naypyidaw as the capital city, they accelerated the construction of facilities: roads, buildings, etc. Naypyidaw quickly transforms from abandoned land into a city full of construction projects. It is started with the development of highway number 8 which connects Naypyidaw to Yangon. They constructed Uppatasanti Pagoda, the replica of Shwedagon Pagoda. They also built railway station, parks, fountains, zoo and shopping centers.

Uppatasanti Pagoda is the new landmark of Myanmar to attract the tourists, replicated from the great Shwedagon Pagoda model. The Uppatasanti Pagoda is 1 foot shorter than the great Shwedagon Pagoda, in order to keep Shwedagon Pagoda being the great of Myanmar as always.

The great monument of three kings is created to praise the important 3 kings of Myanmar: Anawrahta of Pagan, Bayinnaung of Hongsawadee and Alaungpaya of Shwebo. The great monument of three kings is placed at the center of Naypyidaw city.

The city sight-seeing on Naypyidaw city bus ride is popular among tourists. Naypyidaw city does not contain much skyscraper or tall building. Therefore, tourists can see great view in distance from the city bus. The city plan of Naypyidaw is divided into 4 main zones: government office zone, hotel zone, industry zone and military zone. They contain school building, university, hotel, residences and armory.

Traveling in Naypyidaw

An airplane ride is only path from Thailand to Naypyidaw because Myanmar government does not allow foreigners get in the country by car ride. The tourists can take a Bangkok-Myanmar flight, taking about 1 hour and a half, or take a Bangkok-Yangon flight, follow by taking a car ride to Naypyidaw.
