The Great Borobudur Stupa, also called “Barabudur”, is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Indonesia. It is the largest Buddhist pagoda in the world. It is located in the middle of Java Island, about 40 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta. It is the evidence that Indonesia was once one of the realms of Buddhism, before it became the Islamic country with the most Muslim inhabitants in the world. The Great Borobudur Stupa was constructed during 750-850. Borobudur is the constructed in the belief of Mahayana Buddhism, similar to Srivijaya Stupa. This place is regarded as one of the wonders of the world. The inscription on the stone wall around the pagoda is archaeological evidence that the Great Borobudur Stupa was possibly constructed around the 14th Buddhist century. It was in the reign of Sailendra dynasty of Srivijaya Kingdom when they ruled middle Java. The great Borobudur Stupa was built with faith in Mahayana Buddhism, which was extremely prosperous at that time.
Borobudur is a Hindu-Javanese Buddhism place. It is combined with Indian and Indonesian art together. It is constructed with volcanic rock about 2 million square feet. The base is a square with 121 meters length of each side and 403 feet tall. The shape of the construction is a step pyramid. It has a descending order into 8 layers of platforms. The lower 5 layers are square, while upper 3 layers are circular. On three circular upper domes and the top circular platform, there are stupas stacked up to 31.5 meters high in steps. The great stupas have more than 2,672 decoration sculptures and 504 Buddha statues. The central dome upper is surrounded by seventy-two small stupas and seventy-two Buddha statues. The Buddha statues sit in the smaller stupas which has diamond shape holes.
The Great Borobudur is in a shape of step pyramid. The pagoda on the top symbolizes the Srivijaya Stupa. There is corridor with open roof, but no worship room inside. There are beautiful sculptures and cravings implying deep meaning of Dharma, nature and universe. There are bell-shape-pagodas covered with drilled diamond shape holds, another signature of Borobudur.

There are direct flights from several airlines available to take tourists from Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand, to cities of Indonesia. It takes about 3-4 hours. Then, there are car service, boat and plane available to take tourists to Java Island.
