BANAUE RICE TERRACES
BANAUE RICE TERRACES is the place for rice planting terrace in the mountain of Philippines in the north of Luzon Island , Ifugao Province, CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION, whch is 5000 feet over the sea level with about 10360 square meters. It is recorded as the World Heritage by Unesco in 1995 because of its own beauty and also the model for the sustainable agriculture with original technique and lasted for more than 2000 years before the colonization by the Ifugao tribe who migrated from Taiwan to Philippines.
The Ifugao transformed the whole mountain into the rice terrace without any machines, created it up the hill step by step ,making the steep hill into the stair terrace as well as built the local irrigation by using the bamboo leading water from waterfall to the rice field. Ifugao created the terrace on each mountain one by one till it expanded overlooking to all area. Once the planting season comes, the hill will be full of newly grown rice paddy rising up to the sky that it is called Stairway to heaven
Travel to Banaue Rice Terrace
You can take bus from Manila to Banaue about 8-10 hours (1 bus per day except the high season there will be 2 times a day with short break in the middle.) Once arrive in Banaue , the bus will drop you at the market to settle at the accommodation then you can take the tricycle to the hill but if you want to see closer to the rice terrace, you must need to go in by feet.
Even though the rice terrace is one of the most famous attraction in Philippines and called the 8th wonder of the world, the way of life of Ifugao people remains the same as 2000 years before. They preserve the own original agriculture according to their belief of lunar month and the religious rituals which makes it become an incompatible landscape till the present day. It might be a tough adventure to get in to Banaue area, but once you are there, you will never regret. If you prefer the full green rice terrace, the recommended time is from May to June, but if you prefer the golden color of it, it’s better to visit from October to November, Best time for pictures.
